Don Schwert earned his bachelor's degree from Allegheny College, his master's degree at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse University and his doctorate in earth sciences from the University of Waterloo, Canada. He served as a visiting assistant professor for four years before officially joining the NDSU faculty in 1982. In 2005 he was selected for the prestigious 47th Faculty Lectureship. His lecture was titled "A City on Stilts: The Geology Under Fargo." Dr. Schwert has received numerous honors, including: in 2001 the Peltier Award for Innovation in Teaching, the Distinguished Service Award from the College of Science and in 1998; the Outstanding Teacher Award, College of Science and Mathematics, 1997 and the Odney Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1992.
