The Department of Education was established late in 1907 or early 1908 “in conformity with the Nelson law, passed by congress in 1907, to the end that graduates of colleges who are otherwise prepared for teaching science, agriculture, domestic science, manual training, and the like may have pedagogical training.…” (Catalogue, North Dakota Agricultural College, 1908-1909, p. 96). In 1917 the School of Education was established. In addition to the School of Education, the Department of Household Management and Home Economics Education was created in 1922-1923; later the Department of Home Economics Education. In 1939, under the Division of Education, the Department of Education and Psychology was established. By 1955 the Department was part of the School of Applied Arts and Sciences. In 1963 the Institute of Education was created, specifically for teacher education and no longer affiliated with psychology. By 1980 the School of Education was re-established, with the purpose of coordinating all teacher education programs in the various colleges of the University. Agricultural Education was offered through the College of Agriculture through 1985, as of the 1986/88 catalog, it was offered through the School of Education. With the establishment of the College of Human Development and Education in 1992, the School of Education became part of the College and the Department of Home Economics Educations ceased to exist.

The records are separated into nine series. Departmental Background includes a written history of the Department of Home Economics Education from 1892 to 1976, and information on the organization of the Institute of Education (1963). Meetings covers only the Institute of Education from 1968-1979, with wide gaps. Committees, Task Forces, Commissions consists of memos and minutes from the Home Economics Education Advisory Committee from 1977 and 1980, Admissions and Retention Committee (1965) and the Curriculum Committee (1980-1981) of the Institute of Education. Correspondence and Memoranda consists of some general correspondence from the Home Economics Education Department from 1977. Curriculum contains some sample agricultural education curriculum from the 1930s and 1940s; a manual for student teachers (1963), and kindergarten teacher certification requirements for 1975-1976. Reports and Documents includes graduate follow-up studies (1929-1938, 1973-1974, 1970s-1980s, 1989-1990); NCATE status reports on Teacher Education (2001-2004); teacher training/evaluation and employability studies (1956, 1972, n.d.); accreditation reports or follow-ups (1968, 1978, 1982, 1988, 1995); a report on sex role perceptions of faculty and undergraduates (1976); annual reports from the Institute of Education (1982-1985), School of Education (1985-1991), Agricultural Education (1982-1990), and Home Economics Education (1972-1990); guideline for promotion, tenure and evaluation (2002), and a progress report on developing a standards-based master’s degree in teacher education (2003). Subjects consist of Institute of Education faculty lists (1967, 1968) and restructuring (1980), as well as policies, standards and requirements for teacher education (1988, 1990, 1991). Publications include copies of the Department of Home Economics Education Newsletter (1979-80), the Dean’s Grant Newsletter [Institute of Teacher Education] (1980-83), Agricultural Education News (1986–1989 [gaps]), and a cookbook (What to Feed a Bison) of recipes created by students, staff, and faculty of Family & Consumer Science Education (2001). Recruitment includes information on the Institute of Teacher Education (1977, c.1980), a brochure on the School of Education (1990), brochures on Family and Consumer Sciences (2001, 2002), doctoral programs in education (2003), and information on Partnerships in Reasoned Action Teacher Education [PIRATE] (2005) .
