Administrative History

The beginning of the Department of Apparel, Design, Facility and Hospitality Management (ADFHM) is found with the creation of the Department of Clothing and Textiles in 1922. Prior to that there were some design courses in the Applied Arts Department. In 1953, the name changed to the Department of Textiles and Clothing. For 1970-1971 academic year, the Department was Textiles, Clothing & Related Art. In 1971 Design became a separate department, as did Textiles and Clothing. Fashion Design was part of the Design Department from 1977-1983, but was located in Textiles and Clothing from 1972-1976 and again from 1984-1988. In 1988 the departments merged into the Department of Apparel, Textiles and Interior Design. In June of 2001 the hotel, motel, restaurant management major merged into Department of Apparel, Textiles and Interior Design. In the fall of 2002, the department became the Department of Apparel, Design, Facility and Hospitality Management. “The department offers three majors: Apparel and Textiles, Hospitality and Tourism Management, and Interior Design.” (NDSU, 2006-2008 Bulletin). Within the department is the Emily P. Reynolds Costume Collection, which is named after Professor Emily Reynolds, long-time Chair of the department (1966-1981) and through whose efforts and drive the historic costume collection grew.

Scope and Content

The records are separated into six series: Departmental Background which includes a history of the department from 1892 – 1976, a scrapbook from the Art Club (1927-1941), as well as background information on the Emily Reynolds Costume Collection. The Curriculum series deals with special and summer course offerings from 1969-1983. Reports and Documents contains a membership certificate for Hotel\Motel Education from 1956, an annual report for the Department of Design (1982-1983), an annual report for the Department of Textiles and Clothing (1982-1983), agreements with other institution regarding the Hotel, Motel, and Restaurant Management program (1994-1998), and guidelines for promotion, tenure, and evaluation (2002). Subjects contain specialized programming events for fashion, textiles and design from 1954-2002. Publications consist of the Student Chapter of the American Society of Interior Design newsletter (1986, 1987). Recruitment includes various public relations brochures/fact sheets promoting the department (1970s-2003).
