Alice Haley was born in 1893 and received her Bachelor's degree from Simmons College (Boston) in 1916 and her Masters in education from Harvard in 1931. She was hired in 1937 to replace Alba Bales who was fired in the “Purge of 1937.” Upon the reinstatement of Alba Bales in 1940, Alice Haley resigned. After leaving NDAC, she joined the Celanese Corporation. She died in 1981 in Ohio.
