Administrative History

The Department of Agricultural Engineering first appears in the 1924-1925 Catalog within the School of Agriculture. “The department of agricultural engineering deals with the special application of engineering science and practice to the solution of problems in successful agriculture.” (1924-1925 Catalog, p. 83) In the 1950-1951 Catalog, the Department of Agricultural Engineering is added to the School of Engineering. As of the 1998-2000 Bulletin, Agricultural Engineering became the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering

The Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department at NDSU offers undergraduate programs in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (ABEN) and Agricultural Systems Management (ASM). The Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering program is offered in the College of Engineering and Architecture and the Agricultural Systems Management program is offered in the College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources. Scope and Content

The records are separated into eight series. The Meeting series consists of departmental meeting minutes from 1970-1971 to 1980-1981 and 1984-1985. There are four folders in the Committees, Task Forces, Commissions series. The Curriculum Committee folder contains minutes and support material for course changes and revisions (1971-1974); the Gift Committee (1974), the Graduate Degree Requirement Committee (1981); and a reference manual for the Advisory Committee of the Red River Valley Section, American Society of Agricultural Engineers (1989). The Correspondence series consists of one folder of departmental correspondence from 1927–1973 [major gaps]. The Curriculum series includes one folder dealing with the program evaluation of the Agricultural Engineering and Agricultural Mechanization degree programs (1986-1987). The Reports and Documents series consists of a departmental project report on handling livestock feed automatically (1959-63); a paper presentation to ASAE on “The Use of Flat-Bottom Self-Loading Bins for Metering Grain, Hay, and Silage” (1962); a "Hail Suppression" report from 1966; and the 1988 and 1989 annual reports. The Subjects series includes files on the Field Days (1965, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1981) Agricultural Engineering Show (1969-1989, gaps); Departmental Research Projects (1970-1971); seminar on Livestock Housing in the USSR (1975); Departmental Guidelines for administration (1976); a staff list (1980); and a bio-imaging and sensing center brochure (1999). The Publication series consists of three newsletters (February and December 1997, May 1999).  The Recruitment series consists of Fact Sheets (1979, 1986, 1990) and brochures on Agricultural Mechanization and Mechanized Agriculture (n.d.), and Agricultural Engineering brochures (c.1973, n.d.).
