The teaching of history has been an integral part of the University curriculum from its beginning. The 1891 Prospectus for the University lists history as one of the courses of instruction. Prior to 1920, history was grouped with other courses under the general heading of “Group of Applied Sciences.” In 1920, the School of Science and Literature was established with history listed as a department within the school. In 1939 it was the Department of History and Political Science. By 1960 it was once again the History Department, which it has remained.

The records are separated into eight series. Departmental Background includes a written history of the department from 1919 and the detailed 2003 mission statement of the department. Meetings contains meeting minutes, with numerous gaps, from 1971-1981 and 2000 to present. Committees, Task Forces, Commissions consists of memos and minutes from the Graduate Committee, which dealt with current and prospective graduate students (1970-1973), Promotion-Tenure Committee (1975), the Merit Committee (1977), and the Search Committee (1977-1978). Correspondence and Memoranda consists of departmental, college, and university-wide memos from 1973–1983. Curriculum deals with curriculum changes (proposed courses, course revisions, and new courses), as well as syllabi and information on some courses. Reports and Documents includes the History Department annual report (1987-1988), the status of the Joint Ph.D. History Program [with the University of North Dakota] (November 2000), History Department priorities (September 2004), and the Assessment Report: History Bachelor's Program – 2005. Subjects consist of information on the William C. Hunter Memorial Lecture series from1970-1984, information on the History Graduate Program in 1978, and a temporary committee to discuss a proposed North Dakota statewide Historical Association from May 1981. Publications includes the History Club Constitution (1968), a Manual for Graduate Students in History (1969), Fact Sheets: History (1974, 1977, 1993, 2002) and Public History (1981), newsletters: From the Archives (1 issue circa 1993, December 1994-1997, 1999-2003), and the brochure from the joint Ph.D. History Program with UND (December 2002).
