Administrative History

The first indication of any type of sociology course work is in the 1936-1937 bulletin under the Department of Social and Economic Science, which became the Department of Economics and Sociology in 1939. In 1939 the department changed to the Department of Social Science, including sociology, history, and economics, and in 1940 politics also became a component in the department. In 1967, sociology was a component in the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences. In 1972 sociology was listed as a major with course work in anthropology offered and in 1978 the present Department of Sociology and Anthropology was created. The emergency management component was added in 2002.

Scope and Content

The records consist of eight folders, including departmental facts (1989, 1993), memos about speakers coming to campus (1976, 1978), a proposed human relations major (early 1980s), departmental highlights (1988-1989), a booklet on using the internet by Gary Goreham, recruitment/public relations brochures (1970s), a brochure on the emergency management program (2004), and a brochure on the masters in sociology (2005).
