Music is first listed as a department in the 1903-1904 bulletin. By 1992 Music had joined the Division of Fine Arts with the Art Department and the Theatre Arts Department.

Primarily the records consist of five series. Departmental Background includes a student paper from the 1950s dealing with the history of music at the college/university, a Spectrum article on the history of the Cadet Band, and a Bison annual article (1935) about the Gold Star Band. Curriculum consists of information on workshops in the late 1960s and 1970s. Subjects deal entirely with accreditation articles (1970-1971). Publications include sheet music for the North Dakota Hymn, college fight songs (undated), and a student handbook from the mid-1990s. Recruitment consists of recruitment/public relations pieces from the 1960s through 2004.
