Administrative History
 

As of the 1960 bulletin, the Department of Communications was part of the College of Arts and Sciences, although the Speech Department was established by 1939 in the School of Applied Arts and Sciences. By the late 1980s, it was the Department of Mass Communications, Speech Communications, Theatre Arts. In 1992, Theatre Arts became part of the newly created Division of Fine Arts and Mass Communications and Speech Communications became components of the Communications Department. In February 2006, it was announced that five new majors would be offered from the Communications Department in the fall 2006: m anagement communication; journalism, broadcasting and communication technology; health communication; agricultural communication and public relations and advertising.

Scope and Content
 

The records are separated into six series: Departmental Background includes fact sheets and highlights for the department from the 1970s to the mid-1990s. Curriculum includes information on a radio speech class from the 1950s, information on a few courses in the 1970s, a core major proposal from 1979, and a workshop on classroom communications from the 1980s. Reports and Documents cover a plan for the future of speech and drama, c. 1971; policy statements; two departmental reports, one on the effects of television and one on highway symbols (1978); and two annual reports from 2001-2002 and 2002-2003. Subjects consist of flyers for debates (1970s), the college reorganization, recognition banquet (1994), and programs for the Red River Communications Conference (1994, 1995). Publications are an eclectic series with a brochure on public speaking by Alfred Arvold (Professor of Speech, 1907-1952), style manuals from the 1970s, The Focus, a departmental newsletter (1980-1984), a graduate handbook and how to create a web paper (1996), a journal of undergraduate research from 1998, and a copy of a newsletter for undergraduate advisees (1998). Recruitment includes various public relations flyers and booklets promoting the department (1970-2003).
