Richard Bovard earned his Bachelor's degree in English at Kalamazoo College (1963), a Master's degree from the University of Michigan (1964), and a Doctorate in English from the University of Denver (1972).
He began working at NDSU in 1972 as an Assistant Professor of English. He served as Chair of the English Department from 1981 to 1991. He was Interim Director of the Division of Fine Arts from 1994 to 1995, Interim Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences from 1995 to 1996, and Interim Director of NDSU Libraries from 1997 to 2000. He also served as Assistant Dean, College of University Studies (1978-1981).
In 1975 he was the State Director for the American Issues Forum. In 1993, he received NDSU's Outstanding Service award. He retired in 2001 after twenty-nine years of service to North Dakota State University. In June of 2001 Richard Bovard was named Professor Emeritus of English.
