Margriet Lacy was born on April 4, 1943 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. She received her Kandidaats from the University of Amsterdam in 1966 and her Doctoral, also from the University of Amsterdam in 1969. In 1977 she completed her Masters of Philosophy in French at the University of Kansas and her Ph.D., also in French from the University of Kansas in 1972.
She joined the faculty at North Dakota State as a part-time lecturer in French and German in 1972 and became an assistant professor in French and German in 1972. From 1981-1984 she was Chair of the Department of Modern Languages. From 1982-1983 she was also the Presiding Officer of the Faculty Senate and in 1983 she was promoted to full professor.
In 1984 she was made Associate Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and in 1985 became the Dean of the College in 1985.
During her five year tenure as Dean, she also held the position of Associate Vice President for Instruction (1987-1992) out of the Office of the Vice Prescient for Academic Affairs, and she was the Director of International Activities in 1990. She was also a “loaned executive for system academic affairs” in the office of the North Dakota University System in Bismarck, North Dakota, from October 1990 – May 1991. In July of 1992 she left NDSU to become the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University.
In 1988 she received Blue Key's Doctor of Service award and she held the position of President of the American Association for Netherlandic Studies in 1989.
