		Archer Jones was born in Richmond, Virginia on October 14, 1926. He obtained his bachelor's degree from Hampton-Sydney College in 1949, both his Master's in history (1953) and his Ph.D. (1955) from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. Jones assumed his duties as dean in September 1968, replacing Seth Russell. He held this position for 17 years, until his retirement in August 1985. During his tenure the name of the college was changed from the College of Arts and Sciences to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. After retirement, he was named Professor Emeritus of History at NDSU. In addition to teaching courses in history and assuming the duties as director of the North Dakota Institute for Regional Studies during his tenure, Jones also wrote many articles and books. The majority of these were in the areas of military and economic history. He shared the Bell I. Wiley Prize with his co-authors for the book Why the South Lost the War and won the Jefferson Davis Award for Politics of Command. During a leave of absence (July 1, 1976 through June 30, 1977) he was the John F. Morrison Chair of Military History at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Jones was also active in other areas, such as the Cass County and Red River Valley historical societies, as well as Phi Kappa Phi. Archer Jones died January 23, 2006, in Richmond, Virginia.
	Scope and Content
		The records consist of the College Administrative Series, the College Committee Series, the Departments Series, and the Campus Committee Series. The College Administrative Series contains records such as budget, department planning, and Board of Higher Education which pertain to the administrative duties of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Architecture was included in this series because the material was accumulated when the department was to move to Humanities and Social Sciences. This move was subsequently canceled. Other files contain information on faculty research proposals, North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference files, the Scholars Program, the Tri-College Common Market, and the Program Evaluation Committee. The College Committee Series contains files of the various Humanities and Social Science committees Dean Jones either chaired or participated on during his tenure. The promotion files contain information on employees nominated and/or granted promotions in their particular departments. Meeting minutes of the Chairmen's meetings, as well as the Curriculum Committee are also included in this series. Details about the renovation of Minard are also available. There is also substantial information on the Concentrated Approach Program (CAP). This program was implemented to give disadvantaged high school students the opportunity to take specialized university courses until they could be mainstreamed into the regular university curriculum. The Departments Series contains materials on the various departments within the College of Humanities and Social Science. For example, the departments of business Administration and Economics, History, ROTC, Modern Languages, and Speech Pathology and Audiology, as well as others contained in this series. Course descriptions, examples of class work. and departmental meeting minutes and correspondence are examples of information which can be found. The Campus Committee Series consists of the records of the various campus-wide committees that Dean Jones participated on. The Administrative/Academic Council files are especially complete in that they contain notes Jones took at the meetings--complete with doodles.
