		Seth Winfield Russell was born June 3, 1904 in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania. He received his M.A. from Pennsylvania State University in 1935 and his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1939. Russell replaced G.E. Giesecke as dean in 1953, leaving Penn State where he had been a professor and head of the department of sociology. He had membership in numerous organizations and societies, including Phi Kappa Psi, Pi Gamma Mu, Alpha Kappa Delta, the American Sociological Society (fellow), and the Midwest Sociological Society (board member 1965-1967). In 1960-1961, he served as chairman of the Arts and Sciences Division of the American Land Grant Universities and Colleges Association. In addition, during a sabbatical leave in 1961-1962, Russell was a visiting staff member at the Center for the Study of Liberal Education for Adults, Chicago. Russell resigned his position as college dean in 1968 to return to teaching. He served as professor of sociology and dean emeritus as well as chair of social behavior sciences until his retirement in 1971. During his tenure as dean, Russell was instrumental in the 1959-60 campaign to change the name of North Dakota Agricultural College to North Dakota State University. Seth Russell died December 30, 1989, in Bradenton, Florida.
	Scope and Content
		The records consist of a Subject File Series, which includes college council meeting minutes (1958-1961), and the construction of Stevens Hall. In addition, there are several files on the Extension program offered through the university. Russell was a strong believer in evening and extension (classes offered throughout the state, taught by NDAC faculty) courses and promoted the program throughout his tenure. Another interesting file in this series is the City Commissioners Meeting Minutes of 1966. NDAC faculty member John Bond served as Fargo Civil Service Commissioner and the meeting was held to discuss his removal from this position.
