Biography
 

Gustav Ernst Giesecke was born September 13, 1908, in Marble Falls, Texas. He received his Bachelor's (1931), Master's (1934) and Ph.D. (1938) from Stanford University. In 1962 he earned the Doctor of Laws degree at the University of Toledo.

After receiving his doctorate, he was an instructor in German and a Counselor at the Student Personnel Bureau at the University of Illinois until 1942, when joined the Navy and served as a Lieutenant in the Naval Reserve until 1946. In 1946 he was appointed assistant dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, assistant professor of German, and assistant dean of Galesburg Undergraduate Division, University of Illinois. In 1949, he accepted the position of dean of the School of Applied Arts and Sciences at North Dakota Agricultural College (NDAC), replacing A.E. Minard. Giesecke resigned his position effective September 1953 to accept the position of vice president of Texas Technological College, Lubbock, Texas. In 1959 he became the associate dean of the Graduate School of Education, professor of higher education, and director of M.A.T. Program at the University of Chicago. In 1965 he became the provost at the University of Toledo. In 1970, he joined Sangamon State University, Springfield, Illinois [University of Illinois, Springfield as of 1995], serving as professor of humanities and higher education (1970-1976) and director of Educational Relations (1971-1976). In 1976 he became a professor emeritus at Sangamon. He died on January 4, 1995.

During his short term as Dean, Giesecke was a member of the educational policies committee of the North Dakota Education Association (serving as committee chairman in 1952-53); was on the board of directors of the Fargo-Moorhead Open Forum; and was a member of the education and information committee of the Fargo Civil Defense agency.

In addition, Giesecke was the founder and later executive director of the North Dakota Institute for Regional Studies. The Institute was begun in 1950 with the intention of collecting and preserving historical material on North Dakota and the Northern Plains.

Scope and Content
 

The records contain of two series: Personal Correspondence Series and Subject File Series.

The Personal Correspondence Series consists primarily of personal correspondence to and from faculty/administration at NDAC from 1949-1973. Many of these warm and personal missives provide excellent insights into Dean Giesecke's relationships with various colleagues. Of particular interest are the letters between Giesecke and NDAC President Fred Hultz (1949-1960).

The Subject File Series contains details about the North Dakota Education Association conventions, as well as College Council meeting minutes from 1949 to 1953. In addition, there is information on the beginnings of the nursing degree program offered at NDAC. There are also several files related to the President's office, including correspondence, meeting minutes, and university business.
