In the first North Dakota Agricultural College catalog (May 1892), the Department of Veterinary Science is listed as one of the eleven original departments. The 1893 catalog lists the Department of Physiology and Veterinary Science. By the 1898-99 catalog, it was the Department of Veterinary Science. The Department of Veterinary Science continued through 1994, when it became the Department of Veterinary and Microbiological sciences, although in 1989, the first Department of Veterinary Science/Microbiology annual report was issued. Microbiology first appeared as a separate area of study in the 1988-1990 catalog.

There was also a School of Veterinary Science which began in 1910 and continued through 1923.

The records are arranged into five series. Departmental Background consists of one folder with some background information on the department. Reports and Documents include annual reports and reviews for veterinary science from 1979 through 1988 [gaps]; a program evaluation (1986), annual report (1988), and a review (1988) for microbiology; annual reports and review for veterinary science and microbiology from 1989-2004 [gaps]; and annual reports for veterinary diagnostic services for 2001-2003. Subjects contain information on the Hot Zone program (2000, 2001, 2003) and the diagnostic laboratory fee schedule for 2002. Publications consist a newsletter: Soars (fall 1988, spring 1989) and catalogs for veterinary medicine and surgery (1910-1911 – 1922-1923). Recruitment contains fellowship announcements (1998, 2000), fact sheets for microbiology (1988, 1993, 1997, 1999), brochures and for veterinary science and microbiology (1990, 1993, 2005), and fact sheets for veterinary medicine – c.1973; and pre-veterinary medicine – 1986, 1993, 1997, 1998.
