“In 1950 and earlier, soil scientists were members of the Agronomy Department in the College of Agricultural and Agricultural Experiment Station. For easier identification soil scientists were classified under Agronomy (Soils) and crop scientists under Agronomy (Crops). In 1959 soil scientists were separated from crop scientists and were members of the Soils Department. The department name of Soils Department was used from 1959 to 1981. In December 1981 the name of the department was changed to Department of Soil Science which is the present name.”

The records are arranged into five series. Departmental Background consists of a departmental history from 1950 to 1980. Reports and Documents includes annual reports (1981, 1988) and an academic program evaluation (1987). Subjects consist of a brochure about the NDAC Soils Special Train in 1952 and an article titled “Valley Soil Loses Nitrogen,” from the Fargo Forum , July 16, 1975. Publications consist of departmental newsletters: the Solum (1991, 1992, 1993, 2002) and The Horizon Herald (1988 – 1992). Recruitment includes soil science fact sheets (1998, 1993) and a brochure: A Career for You - Soil Science (1989).
