Clare B. (C.B.) Waldron was born on December 6, 1865, in Ravenna, Ohio. His family moved to Michigan when he was a boy. He received his bachelor's of science degree from Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) in 1887. He did post-graduate work in botany at Michigan State for two years. He was the first staff member of North Dakota Agricultural College and he was hired to collect and classify grasses, plants, and soils of North Dakota. He arrived on July 19, 1890 and for the next three months he was the only staff member of the college or experiment station. C.B. was initially a professor of horticulture and head of the department until 1915 when he was made vice dean of agriculture. In 1917 he became Dean of Agriculture, as well as Professor of Horticulture and Forestry. In 1924 he stepped down to become Vice Dean of Agriculture until 1927. In 1935 he became Professor of Landscape Gardening and Forestry. He retired in June of 1946.

He served in the United States Army in 1919 and 1920. In 1939 he honored with Blue Key's Doctor of Service Award. In 1940 NDAC awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Agriculture degree. At commencement in 1945, a bust of C.B. was unveiled, He died March 6, 1947 at his son's home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

In 1891 he married Lois Hooper. Mrs. Waldron was the first librarian at the A.C. They had three children.

In 1958 the Plot Seed Laboratory was built and served the agronomy research program of the Agricultural Experiment Station. The name of the building was changed in 1965 to Waldron Laboratory in honor of Clare Bailey (C. B.) and Lawrence Root (L. R.) Waldron.
