Churchill Hall experienced a rash of fires in November 1969--four to be exact. The first fire was caused by two roommates wrestling and knocking cigarette ash onto to the bed. A second fire was discovered in the west part of the building in the linen chute. The third fire was in the east part of the building in the trash chute. The last fire was again found in the building's west wing this time in the trash chute. The first three fires all occurred on Friday and the last fire on Monday. The R. A.s fought all four fires and the Fargo Fire Department was called in for backup. The R. A.s had some problems when fighting the fires as the fire extinguishers malfunctioned (The Spectrum, November 13, 1969, p. 1). The exact cause of the last three fires was unknown.
In January 1970 another trash chute fire hit Churchill. There was little damage, but there was "intense smoke damage throughout" (The Spectrum, January 22, 1970, p. 1).
