Bison Courts History

Construction began on the Bison Courts in the spring of 1956. They provided additional housing for married students and veterans due to the predicted increase in the number of married couples attending college. There were several conditions placed on residency in the new housing. Ninety percent of the occupants had to be undergraduate students and the North Court was reserved for veterans. The Bison Courts were ready for students by the fall of 1957.

The completed Bison Courts consisted of a north and a west court each measuring 31 feet by 424 feet and containing a total of forty units--twenty units were one-bedroom and twenty units were two-bedroom. The bedrooms contained a complete wall of closets that had sliding panel doors and high shelves. The living room possessed a large picture window with lower windows that opened to provide ventilation and a space for the dining table. The living room and kitchen were separated by a half-wall. The one thing missing from the apartments was a laundry room.

During the late Summer of 2004 the Bison Courts were torn down.  In their place will stand, in 2005, a modern Bison Apartment complex for juniors, seniors, and graduate students.
