The Art Quonsets (originally the Naval Reserve Armory) were constructed in 1948. Planning began in 1947 as the NDAC administration negotiated an agreement with naval officials in Washington. The completed building measured 140 feet by 120 feet. The building's original purpose was to house the Naval Reserve Headquarters for the Fargo division. The quonsets contained the offices and necessary training facilities including the Navy's deep-sea program. It is uncertain when the Navy moved its headquarters, but it appears that in 1990 the Navy made the Armory available to the University since the building was renamed the Art Building that year. Today it houses the Art Department, a student art gallery, an architecture studio and the archaeology lab. Prior to Fall 2003 the building will be torn down and the Art Department will be moving to the old Northern School Supply building in downtown Fargo.
In 2001 the old Northern School Supply building in downtown Fargo was presented to the NDSU Development Foundation by NDSU alumni Doug Burgum. In the Fall of 2004 the Art Department and some of Landscape Architecture moved into the renovated downtown building. The Art Quonsets were torn down in October of 2004.
