Biographical Information
Warren Kress was born on April 15, 1921, in St. Paul, Minnesota. He graduated
from St. Paul Central High School in 1939 as part of the largest graduating
class in Minnesota history (913 graduates) at that time. After enrolling at
the University of Minnesota in 1939, he left college in 1942 to volunteer for
the military draft. He served in New York City in the 518th Military Police
Battalion and then went on to Officer Candidate School at Ft. Custer, Michigan,
becoming a civil affairs/military government officer. He participated in the
D-Day offensive in World War II, landing on Juno Beach during the Normandy Invasion.
After Normandy, Kress moved with his unit across France and into Germany where
he stayed until the end of the war. His unit worked on the logistics problems
of moving Allied forces through civilian populations of refugees and preserving
functioning local governments during the war chaos. In 1946 Kress became a captain
and stayed in the Army Reserve until 1964, eventually attaining the rank of
major.
Upon his return from the war, Kress again entered the University of Minnesota
and completed his undergraduate degree in Geography in 1946. He remained at
the school from 1947 to 1955, working on his graduate degree. At the University
of Minnesota, he served as an Instructor from 1947-51, a Teaching Assistant
from 1951-52, and an Administrative Fellow in Science Filmstrips from 1954-55.
Kress taught at St. Cloud State College as a Visiting Faculty Member from 1955
to 1956, before coming to North Dakota Agricultural College to teach in September
of 1957 (the name changed to North Dakota State University [NDSU] in 1960, three
years after Kress' arrival). Kress obtained his PhD from the University of Minnesota
in 1962 and achieved the rank of professor at NDSU that same year. He taught
at NDSU for thirty-four years. After his retirement in 1991, he was made Professor
Emeritus of Geosciences.
During his thirty-four years at NDSU, Kress was an enthusiastic teacher and
advocate for geography. In fact, for a number of years, he was the only geographer
on the campus. During his time at NDSU, he also served on numerous college committees
and was an active member of many geographic and science organizations, including
the Association of North Dakota Geographers and the North Dakota Academy of
Science. He was a founding member of the College of University Studies at NDSU
and helped organize the college’s accreditation reports in 1966 and 1968.
In 1991, the year of his retirement, Kress received the Outstanding Service
Award from the NDSU College of Humanities and Social Sciences. In 1993, he helped
prepare the Memorial Union Rededication Program and served as Master of Ceremonies
for the event. In 1995, the NDSU geosciences department honored him by opening
the Warren Kress Geography Laboratory, an instructional and research facility
for Geographic Information Systems. In 1999, the University of Minnesota geography
department instituted the Department of Geography Warren D. Kress Distinguished
Alumni Award, naming Kress as the first recipient. Also in 1999, he was honored
as a fifty-year member of the Association of American Geographers.
Kress married Norma Lucille Carter, a musician, in 1960. They had one son, Donald
Carter Kress. On August 23rd, 2001, at age eighty, Warren Kress died of complications
from Lou Gehrig’s Disease (amytrophic lateral schlerosis). He was preceded
in death by his wife, who passed away in 1982.
Scope and Content
The Warren Kress papers document Kress’ life from his early days at St.
Paul High School and the University of Minnesota through his long teaching career
at North Dakota State University. The collection reflects his life-long interest
in geography. The papers have been organized into nine series: Personal Materials
Series, Military Series, National and State Geography/ Science Organizations
Series, North Dakota State University (NDSU) Series, California Geography Projects
Series, Talks Series, Community Activities Series, Correspondence Series, and
Publications Series.
The Personal Materials Series consists of biographical information about Kress,
as well as papers describing his early educational and teaching experiences.
The series contains four sub-series:
The Biographical Materials Sub-Series contains three photos of Kress, a brief
biography of Kress in American Men and Women of Science (12th ed., 1971), and
his personnel record. The President’s Form 2 (used for accreditation purposes)
filled out by Kress provides a listing of all of the publications, speeches,
and projects he had completed up until 1981. Articles in this series include
three from It's Happening at State: the first announces Kress’ retirement
from teaching (April 24, 1991), the second describes the Warren D. Kress Distinguished
Alumni Award (August 18, 1999), and the third is his obituary (August 29, 2001).
Also included in this series is Kress' obituary in the Fargo Forum and the program
from his funeral.
The St. Paul High School Sub-Series contains a newspaper article regarding Kress’ acceptance into the St. Paul Central high school band and correspondence regarding
his high school reunions from the 1940s through the 1960s.
The University of Minnesota Sub-Series consists of papers dealing with Kress’
experience as an undergraduate student and then teacher at the University of
Minnesota (1941-42, 1947-55). Materials include Kress’ notes from some
of the classes he took, papers regarding his participation in the campus Cosmopolitan
Club, letters from his stay in Yellowstone Park in the summer of 1941, notes
and correspondence from his Scandinavia Studies Trip in 1948, and general campus
newspaper articles written by or about Kress while he was at the university.
This sub-series also contains correspondence and notes from Kress’ stay
in Washington D.C. during the fall of 1952. In Washington, Kress worked for
the Environmental Research Branch of the Army and spent some time researching
his thesis.
The St. Cloud State Teachers College (SCSTC) Sub-Series includes materials from
Kress’ year spent teaching at St. Cloud State Teachers College (1955-56)
in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Papers consist of lists of classes Kress taught there,
the notes from one of those classes (Geography of the Russian Sphere), general
correspondence written during his year at the college, and Kress' handwritten
minutes from the SCSTC Faculty Association meetings and the SCSTC Division of
Social Studies Committee meetings.
The Military Series focuses on Kress' activities while serving in the United
States military, especially his time served during World War II. Papers include
his handwritten notes from his Provost Marshal General (PMG) classes, which
Kress took in 1943 as part of his training to be a military policeman. His classes
centered on Traffic Control, Military Law, and Criminal Investigation. This
series contains a great deal of correspondence. Kress wrote and received numerous
letters as he moved around different camps in the United States and then while
he was stationed in Europe. Most of Kress' military correspondence, which began
in 1942 and ended in 1945, is with his parents.
The National and State Geography/Science Organizations Series demonstrates Kress'
active participation in a number of geographic and science-related associations.
Some of the contents of this series include correspondence, brochures, membership
cards, handwritten and typed meeting minutes, organization events, and committee
lists. Not content to simply be a member, Kress held various officer positions
in the different groups and served on numerous committees for each of the organizations.
Some of the associations, including the National Council of Geography Teachers
(1946-1954), the Minnesota Council of Geography Teachers (1949, 1953-1955),
the National Council for Geographic Education (1960s-1980s), the North Dakota
Educational Association-Geography Section (1960s-70s), and the Action Committee
for Environmental Education (1968-1971), show Kress' life-long interest in education
and teaching methods. His interest in North Dakota geography is demonstrated
through his membership in four state geographic/science organizations. Kress
was especially active in the Association of North Dakota Geographers (1958-1967,
1973-1984), serving as secretary and president, as well as heading many committees
over the years.
The North Dakota State University (NDSU) Series is quite large; Kress was a
very active faculty member during his years at the college. He was committed
to promoting geography at NDSU and to bettering the university in whatever ways
he could. The series consists of nine sub-series:
The NDSU Teaching Sub-Series contains papers from many of the classes Kress
taught at NDSU, including worksheets, notes, maps, and syllabi.
The NDSU Accreditation Sub-Series contains materials dealing with NDSU’s
accreditation in 1966 and 1976 by the North Central Association of Colleges
and Secondary Schools (NCA), along with the teacher education program’s
accreditation by the National Council For Accreditation of Teacher Education
(NCATE) in 1968. Kress was heavily involved in helping plan all three accreditation
reports and visits; he worked on NDSU’s All-University Self-Study, served
on the visit committees, assisted in writing NDSU’s official report for
NCATE, and organized the President’s Forms 1 and 2.
The NDSU Institute of Education Sub-Series consists of a number of papers relating
to the Institute of Education program, which defined itself as a professional
faculty for teacher education. The Institute studied curriculums, revised educational
procedures, and researched ways to improve professional education. Kress served
on the Institute of Education Council as well as on various committees for the
Institute, such as the Special Committee on Overhead Projectors and the Objectives
Committee.
The NDSU Academic Divisions Sub-Series contains the meeting minutes and correspondence
of specific divisions related to the department of geography, such as the School
of Arts and Sciences (1958-65), the Division of Natural Sciences (1961-1972),
and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (1983, 1990-1991). Throughout
his time at NDSU, Kress was continuously involved in improving the graduate
school; accordingly, this series also contains minutes from the Faculty of the
Graduate School meetings (1963-1976), and papers related to the Graduate Program
in Community and Regional Planning (1969-80). In addition, the series consists
of papers dealing with the College of University Studies, which Kress helped
found, and information on the new Geosciences Department in 1990.
The NDSU Organizations and Committees Sub-Series contains papers from the many
college-
based groups and associations Kress belonged to while a professor at NDSU. He
was a member of two academic honor societies, the science-oriented Society of
the Sigma Xi and the geography-oriented Gamma Theta Upsilon. He also belonged
to the NDSU chapter of the American Association of University Professors. Kress’ varied interests are shown through the diverse committees he served on during
his years at the college. Papers from the committee files include minutes from
committee meetings, some correspondence, and other general materials from each
committee. Kress sat on such committees as the Graduate Procedures Committee
(1967-69), the Retirement Benefits Committee (1983-84), the Library Advisory
Committee (1982-84), and the Bottineau Branch Study Committee (1972-80). Through
the Committee on the Naming of Buildings, Routes, and Spaces (1973-1994), Kress
was involved in naming, among others, the Reineke Fine Arts Center, Robinson
Hall, Seim Hall, and Bolley Drive. Kress was also active on the Honorary Degrees
Committee (1981-89) and the Camp Ritchie Advisory Committee (1967-68), which
set up courses at the North Dakota Conservation Center on Lake Ashtabula. The
last committee Kress sat on was a Search Committee (1990-91) set up to find
a replacement for him at NDSU after his retirement.
The NDSU University Senate Sub-Series papers demonstrate Kress’ interest
and active participation in this faculty organization. During his years as a
member of the University Senate, Kress served on a number of committees; accordingly,
materials in this sub-series include committee meeting minutes, as well as committee
correspondence and other related papers. During the 1960s and early 1970s, Kress
sat on the Senate Committee on Committees, served as chairman of the Senate
Library Committee, and was elected secretary of the Senate Research Committee.
The last part of this sub-series contains the University Senate monthly meeting
minutes from 1964 to 1970; during these years, Kress attended nearly every meeting.
The NDSU Events Sub-Series consists of papers regarding the various programs
and conferences Kress participated in while at NDSU. He helped plan NDSU’s
annual Research Conferences (1964-67), as well as the college’s annual
Honors Days. For the Honors Days, Kress donated the funds for two awards in
the 1980s in memory of his wife, Norma: the Mayflower Geography Award and the
Mayflower Music Award. Kress also worked on the Great Plains Symposium sponsored
by the North Dakota Institute for Regional Studies in commemoration of the college’s
75th anniversary (1965).
The NDSU Stevens Hall Sub-Series papers reveal Kress’ interest in getting
a new science building constructed at NDSU in the 1960s. Materials in this sub-series
include a detailed architectural drawing of the new building’s interior,
along with two drawings and one photograph of its exterior. Papers include correspondence
and articles relating to the naming of the building after O.A. Stevens (NDSU
botanist) and materials related to the big dedication ceremonies on October
18, 1968. Kress was involved both in the naming of the new hall and with the
planning of the ceremonies, at which he gave a speech. Also in this sub-series
are photographs taken by Kress of the Stevens Hall Honors Day award recipients
of 1990.
The NDSU Memorial Union Sub-Series papers document Kress’ research in
preparation for the Memorial Union’s Rededication Program in 1993. As
a member of the planning committee, Kress researched the history of the Union
and compiled lists of NDSU students killed in wars. The materials in this sub-series
consist of casualty lists, newspaper articles about the Memorial Union, papers
describing the Charles G. French and Robert E. Phillips military awards, the
final program for the Rededication Program, and several photographs of the Vietnam
Wall and the Memorial Union plaques. Kress served as Master of Ceremonies for
the rededication event held May 6, 1993.
The California Geography Projects Series contains papers on two large geography
projects that Kress undertook in California the 1950s and 60s. In the summer
of 1959, Kress served as a Visiting Planning Technician in the Department of
Planning for Culver City, California. Working closely with the City Council,
he studied the urban geography of the area and helped write “Our Urban
Resources: An Economic Base Survey of the city of Culver City, California.”
Papers in this series include several reports, maps, and letters written from
Kress to Culver City’s Director of Planning. Kress undertook a similar
project in Los Angeles in the 1960s, working on a detailed map analysis of the
L.A. area from the standpoint of settlement geography. Papers from the Los Angeles
Project include numerous maps and correspondence between Kress and various Los
Angeles area city managers.
The Talks Series consists of materials from presentations given by Kress at
different events. Papers in this series include programs, brochures, correspondence,
and personal notes. In 1958, Kress presented a paper, “Electric Power
in Minnesota: A Geographical View,” at an Association of American Geographers
meeting in Santa Monica, California. In 1979, he traveled to the South Dakota
State Geography Convention in Brookings, SD, to deliver a talk entitled, "Urban
Physical Geography, Including Anthropogenic Geomorphology." Also in 1979,
Kress took part in a program at Moorhead State University called "Taking
the Measure of the Land." The program was created around a traveling National
Archives Exhibit, which visited the Moorhead campus in early summer. As part
of the program, Kress led a two day seminar in June entitled, "How the
West was Found," which centered on the exhibit and instructed education
students on the best ways to teach map skills in the classroom. Included in
this file are the various map worksheets Kress used in the seminar. Materials
from other talks Kress gave over the years are also included in this series
– including presentations for such groups as the Fargo Engineers Club,
the Commons Club, and the Comstock Historic House Society.
The Community Activities Series focuses on two organizations: the Boy Scouts
of America and the Lutheran Church. Kress gave much of his free time to these
two groups. While living in St. Paul, Kress was heavily involved with the Evangelical
Lutheran Gloria Dei Church. The papers in this series demonstrate that Kress
acted as editor-in-chief of the Dei Times, was chairman of the Twenty Group
(a church group for men between the ages of 20 and 29), served as a deacon of
the church, and was an active member of both the Church Council and the Church
Luther League. Following his move to Fargo, Kress became a long-time member
of the Elim Lutheran Church. Kress, who became an Explorer Senior Scout, was
also a volunteer for the Boy Scouts. He helped lead Boy Scout camps, served
as a Scout Master, and helped plan events such as Fathers and Sons Banquets.
The Correspondence Series is large and covers the years between 1939 and 1986.
There is a gap between 1942 and 1945; letters from these years can be found
under the Military Series in this collection. The Correspondence Series consists
of two sub-series:
The Personal Correspondence Sub-Series (1940-1986) consists of correspondence
with Kress’ friends, relatives, close contemporaries, and army buddies.
Much of Kress’ correspondence is with his brother Robert or his parents,
whom he kept in faithful contact with over the years. The varied content found
in the letters reveals Kress’ interests and activities over the years.
Frequent topics include the military, photography, vacations/trips, and world
events. Also included in the Personal Correspondence Sub-Series are specific
collections of letters from three of Kress' acquaintances: Edward Patrick Moyer
(1939-1950), Daniel B. Magraw (1941-1955), and Paul Hansen (1939-1955). These
three men, together with Kress, were evidently all good friends who kept in
frequent contact with one another through lengthy letters, most of which are
filled with mentions of girls, beer, and army life.
The Professional Correspondence Sub-Series (1941-1986) consists of correspondence
with academic colleagues, students, and company officials. These letters discuss
Kress’ various academic activities, including his teaching load, his interest
in maps of all kinds, his arrangement of geographic field trips, and his graduate
work on the Geography of Electric Power in Minnesota. Also included in this
sub-series are job applications from colleges around the country, letters regarding
Kress’ articles in North Dakota Teacher, charity donation notes, Army
Reserve correspondence, and letters Kress wrote to magazines and newspapers.
In addition, there are a few letters dealing with Kress’ political involvement,
including a birthday party invitation for North Dakota representative Quentin
N. Burdick. Kress also served as the faculty advisor for the Young Republican
Club and helped out with activities sponsored by the Republican National Committee.
The Publication Series consists chiefly of eight published works written by
Kress. The
publications, all about local topics relative to either Minnesota or North Dakota,
show Kress' interest in regional geography. The first two are geographic bibliographies: "Modern Geography: Recommended Books and Maps for Minnesota Libraries"
in Minnesota Libraries (1954), and "Paperback Books of Geographic Interest"
in the Bulletin of the Association of North Dakota Geographers (1965). The next
three are reports Kress wrote for the North Dakota Institute of Regional Studies:
Some Remarks Regarding the Ecology of North Dakota Together with an Initial
Bibliography of the Vegetation of the State (1963), A List of Publications Pertaining
to the Animal Life of North Dakota (1963), and Toward a Bibliography of Sociological
Writings on North Dakota: Some Suggestions and a Working List (1966). The last
publications in this series are three 1962 articles from North Dakota Teacher
magazine: "Hydrographic Patterns of North Dakota," "Railroads
in North Dakota," and "Aspects of the Geography of Agriculture in
North Dakota." Also included in this series are writing proposals written
by Kress to the Institute for Regional Studies.
