Biography
Harlow Leslie Walster was born on the family homestead near Spring Green, Wisconsin on April 20, 1883. He attended high school there, and worked on the family farm until he was19. He attended the University of Wisconsin, and graduated in 1908 with a Bachelor of Science Degree, then obtained an M.A. from Harvard in 1913, and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1918. He served as Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin until 1919, when he came to the North Dakota Agricultural College as agronomist at the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station.
Walster married Ada Georgene Meadow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George C. Meadows, of Ipswich, South Dakota in June 1921. Ada received a B.A. from the University of South Dakota in 1912, and a M.A. from Columbia University in 1915. She came to the North Dakota Agricultural College in 1918 and joined the Home Economics Department. The Walsters were members of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Fargo, and served in many capacities. They had one daughter, Eunice Moe.
In 1924 Walster became Dean of the School of Agriculture, a position he held until his retirement in 1953. He was dedicated to his chosen field and contributed many publications to the profession. In 1932 he was made director of the Division of Agricultural Extension, and held the post jointly with his chief Agronomist and Dean positions. He was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science from 1908, and a member of the American Society of Agronomy, American Society of Soil Science, and the American Soil Survey Association. He was also a life member and vice president of the Agricultural History Society of the United States, a member of the Northern Great Plains Agricultural Council, and chairman and secretary of the agricultural teaching section of the Association of Land Grant Colleges.
He was a founder of the International Congress of Soil Science and served as a consultant to the Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Department of Interior. In 1926 he acted as a consultant to the U.S. Office of Education on the congressional survey of land grant colleges.
North Dakota organizations with which he had been affiliated include the North Dakota Educational Association, North Dakota Academy of Science, North Dakota Rural Rehabilitation Corporation, the State Historical Society of North Dakota, North Dakota Research Foundation, North Dakota State Planning Board, and Soil Conservation Service. Walster was also an active Mason, and served as Junior Grand Warden from 1947-1948; Senior Grand Warden, 1948-1949; Deputy Grand Master, 1948-1950; and Grand Master, 1950-1951 of the Masonic Grand Lodge of North Dakota. In Fargo he was director of the Fargo School of Religious Education, and president of the Shiloh and Sunrise Masonic lodges, the Fargo Commons Club, and Fargo Lions. He was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Zeta, Lambda Upsilon, Gamma Alpha, and Alpha Gamma Rho.
Mrs. Walster was also active in the community. She was President of the Fargo Fine Arts Club and the Faculty Woman's Club at the North Dakota Agricultural College. She also served as North Dakota chairperson of the Women's Action Committee for Lasting Peace, and served as Red River Valley president and National Council member of Camp Fire Council, and recording secretary of the North Dakota Federation of Women's Clubs. She had been president of the college Y.W.C.A., and 1937 chairperson of the Fargo Community Chest residential campaign. She was also a member of Kappa Alpha Phi, Phi Upsilon Omicron, Phi Kappa Phi, the Eastern Star, and the Travois Club.
Between May and August 1941, Dean Walster was granted a leave of absence for an extensive tour of South America as a guest of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. During the tour he published a series of letters and articles on South America relating to agriculture and other topics. In 1947 he toured Central America as the guest of the United States Fruit Company, during which he visited the Pan-American School of Agriculture in Honduras.
Dr. Walster retired in July 1953, and received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science from NDSU. He devoted his remaining years to writing his memoirs, and working on the accomplishments of his predecessors until his death on October 7, 1957. He was buried at Lodi, Wisconsin.
Scope and Contents
The Harlow Leslie Walster papers consist of correspondence during his tenure as Dean of Agriculture at the North Dakota Agricultural College; articles and speeches relating to North Dakota agriculture; correspondence, articles, diaries, and scrapbooks concerning his Latin and South American trips; and scrapbooks relating to his retirement, the history of North Dakota, and the Red River Valley.
The NDAC School of Agriculture Series includes correspondence, arranged alphabetically and chronologically, concerning his position as Dean. There are department reports, college committee minutes, college faculty correspondence and correspondence from the President's office. The years cover 1930 to 1935. Also included are files relating to the founding of the School of Agriculture and its purpose, a history of the Experiment Station and the Branch Stations of Dickinson, Langdon, and Williston. There are files on the Flax Institute of the United States, Farm Folk School, students, Poultry Husbandry Survey, and general correspondence from 1913 to 1957 relating to many topics.
The Subject File Series, written by Walster, contains many articles, speeches, biographical sketches, and bibliographies pertaining to agriculture, education, government, culture and weather. There are many articles on water, land, and resource conservation. Crops, such as wheat, flax, corn, and clover receive special treatment, but the series also contains interesting histories of Fargo, the Missouri River Basin, Red River Valley, and the Dakotas in general. Chronologically, the series covers from pre-statehood to the 1950s.
The Latin and South American Series is an interesting collection of articles, correspondence, and diaries of Walster's trip to the region in 1941, and again in 1947. The topics range from his personal observations of the region, to the agriculture there and the impact of the United States on the region.
The Manuscript Series contains published and unpublished manuscripts by Walster. Five For the Land is Walster's account of the accomplishments of five leading scientists in the early years of the Agricultural College, including Claire B. Waldron, Henry Luke Bolley, Edwin Fremont Ladd, John Henry Shepperd, and Lawrence Root Waldron. Another manuscript is an unpublished history of his family's homestead in Wisconsin, called the Butternut Hollow Farm. Another unpublished manuscript, Milestones of Progress is a history of flax and flax research in North Dakota. Soils and Soil Fertility is a manuscript published by Walster while at the University of Wisconsin.
The Scrapbook Series reflects Walster's interests in the early history of the region from early newspaper accounts from the 1880s, to Walster's retirement in 1953. Agriculture, Geology, his trip to South America, and articles about North Dakota in general are all covered. The series extensively covers the early history and events of the Dakotas, which he copied from early newspapers of the region.
The File Card Series contains references to articles on the early history
of the Dakotas, and the contributions of the many agricultural scientists
employed at the Agricultural College.
