Biography
Alfred E. Rheineck was born on October 7, 1904 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He received his Bachelor’s from the University of Wisconsin in Chemical engineering in 1928, his Master’s from Lehigh University in Chemistry in 1931, and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 1934. In August of 1950, he married Helen Kaiser and they had three children.

Prior to coming to NDAC, he was a Research Chemist & Research Director at Devoe & Raynolds, Inc., Louisville, KY (1934-1942), the Assistant Chief, Drying Oils Section, Fats and Oils Branch, USDA, Washington, D.C. (1942-1943), a Research Chemist at Hercules Powder Co., Wilmington, DE (1943-1951), and a Research Chemist and Research Supervisor at Archer, Daniels-Midland Co. (1951-1958). When he came to NDAC in 1958 as Chair of Polymers and Coatings, he initiated an entirely new curriculum in paints, varnishes and lacquers, know today as coatings.

He received the 1969 Faculty Lectureship award and presented a speech titled “Coatings: From the Caveman to Apollo 8.” He held 20 U.S. patents, in addition to patents in 9 European countries. He published over 65 papers. He was a member of Sigma Xi, Phi Sigma, Rho Chi, American Chemical Society, American Oil Chemists Society and Oil and Colour Chemists Association, and the Federation of Societies for Paint Technology. He died on August 10, 1971.

Scope and Content
The records (1950-1971) are in the order as received and include: correspondence files, subject files, articles and papers. Boxes 1-4 are correspondence files in alphabetical order, boxes 4-7 are subject files in alphabetical order, and boxes 7-8 are papers and articles, as well as some additional subject files.
