Biographical Information
Dr. Arlon G. Hazen (June 1961-January 1962) - Arlon Giberson
Hazen was born in 1920 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. He earned his bachelor's
in agricultural engineering from Oklahoma State and a mater's from Iowa
State. During the Second World War he served with the army engineers
in Europe, being discharged as a lieutenant colonel in 1946. He joined
NDAC in January 1946 as Superintendent of the Williston Branch Station.
In 1951 he became the Assistant to the Director, Agricultural Experiment
Station, Fargo. In 1956 he was appointed Acting Dean of the College
of Agriculture and Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station and
in 1957 he became Dean and Director. In June of 1961 he became Acting
President until January of 1962. In 1966 he received the prestigious
Doctor of Service Award from Blue Key. He resigned from NDSU in 1978
to take the position of Regional Director, North Central Association of
Agricultural Experiment Stations. He passed away in January 1979.
Dr. Herbert R. Albrecht (January 1962-1967) - Dr. Albrecht was born in 1909 in Wisconsin. He received his bachelors, masters, and doctorate degree from the University of Wisconsin. From 1936 to 1944, he served on the faculty of Auburn University. He joined the agronomy department at Purdue in 1944 and stayed there until accepting a position at Penn State. At Penn State he chaired the agronomy department, and became Director of Extension in 1953, where he stayed until coming to NDSU in 1962. Dr. Albrecht resigned in November 1967 to accept the position of Director of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan, Nigeria. Dr. Albrecht passed away in May of 1992.
Dr. Laurel D. Loftsgard (January 1968-October 1987) was the first NDSU alumnus to serve as President of NDSU. Dr. Loftsgard was born in 1926 in Hoople, North Dakota. He served in the armed forces after graduating high school and again during his collegiate career. He graduated with a bachelor's in agricultural economics from NDAC in1954. He went on to Iowa State to earn his masters and doctorate degrees. He returned to NDAC in 1958 as an assistant professor of agricultural economics and in 1966 he was appointed Vice President for Academic Affairs. He was appointed acting President in January 1968 and made permanent by the Board of Higher Education six months later. During his presidency, enrollment increased by over 50%, more than $30 million worth of building projects were undertaken, he spearheaded the creation of the NDSU Development foundation, as well as many other achievements. In 1980 he received Blue Key's Doctor of Service Award. President Loftsgard died of cancer in early October 1987 after serving as NDSU's President for 19 years. In 1991, the new crop and weed sciences building was dedicated L.D. Loftsgard Hall.
Dr. Robert D. Koob (October 1987-May 1988) - Dr. Koob was born in 1941 in Hawarden, Iowa. He received his bachelors in science education from the University of Northern Iowa and his doctorate in chemistry from the University of Kansas. He served as chairman of the chemistry department at NDSU from 1973 to 1977 ands again in 1979 and 1980. He was named Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics at NDSU in 1981. In 1985 he was named Vice President for Academic Affairs. He also served for 10 years as the Director of the North Dakota Water Resources Institute. In 1987 he received the Doctor of Service Award from Blue Key. In August of 1990, Dr. Koob resigned and took the position of Senior vice President for Academic Affairs, California Polytechnic Institute, San Luis Obispo.
