History
North Dakota State University's local chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi
Honor Society was organized on May 12, 1913. Two former members of
the University of Tennessee chapter, Professors E.S. Reynolds and Minna
A. Stoner, assisted in the organization and establishment of the chapter,
and Dr. Reynolds acted as the installing officer at the first meeting.
There were twenty-three original members.
The purpose of establishing the Phi Kappa Phi chapter was to "provide an honor society dedicated to the Unity and Democracy of Education." The main objectives were to stress the importance of scholarship and character and to promote academic achievement. As it's motto the local chapter adopted the phrase "The love of learning rules the world."
Regular chapter meetings were held each quarter with officers elected at the regular spring quarter meeting. Membership was divided into resident, non-resident and honorary members. Those elected to be members had to be in the upper fifth of their graduating class. Banquets and convocations were held yearly to honor the newest members of the society. The Phi Kappa Phi chapter is still active at NDSU.
Scope and Contents
The Phi Kappa Phi records consist of constitutions and by-laws, meeting minutes, correspondence, financial records, membership files, and various subject files.
The Constitution and Bylaws series consists of constitution and by laws folder is a national constitution, and several revised copies of the local chapter constitution from 1929, 1958, 1960,1963, 1971, 1978, and 1981.
The Meeting Minutes series covers the period from 1936 to 1992 and appears to be very complete. The meeting minutes between 1987-1992 also include a majority or the Phi Kappa Phi correspondence. The Correspondence series is arranged chronologically from 1949 - 1986, 1996. The letters are both incoming and outgoing. The subject matter is largely based on the election of new members into the honor society. Also included, is information concerning upcoming chapter events as well as events on the national level. Some of the correspondence folders contain lists of members for that school year.
The Subject Files series, which are in alphabetical order, cover many different aspects associated with Phi Kappa Phi. This series includes a letter on the installation of additional chapters,
The Financial Records series involves cashbooks as well as receipts of the membership dues and a treasures report. The Cashbooks cover the years from 1940 - 1977, except for the years 1962 to 1970. The Treasurer's report covers the years from 1960 to 1972. The Initiation fee duplicates are from 1965 to 1972, as well as computer print-offs from receipts due that include the years between 1975 and 1979. There is also a folder that includes receipts from travel expenses as well as receipts for campus activities.
The Membership Information series includes joint membership lists (found in Box 2), as well as strictly faculty membership card (1913-1950s) in Box 4, student meber cards (1953-1970) in Box 5
