PHI KAPPA PHI. NORTH DAKOTA AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE CHAPTER
Records, 1913-1951
1 l.f.
History
North Dakota State University's local chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society was organized on May 12, 1913. Two former members of the University of Tennessee chapter, E.S. Reynolds and Minna A. Stoner, assisted in the organization and establishment of the chapter, and Dr. Reynolds acted as the installing officer at the first meeting. There were twenty-three original charter members.
The purpose of establishing the Phi Kappa Phi chapter was to "provide an honor society dedicated to the Unity and Democracy of Education." The main objectives were to stress the importance of scholarship and character and to promote academic achievement. As its motto the local chapter adopted the phrase "The love of learning rules the world."
Regular chapter meetings were held each term (quarter) with officers elected at the regular spring term meeting. Membership was divided into resident, non-resident and honorary members. Those elected to be members had to be in the upper fifth of their graduating class. Banquets and convocations were held yearly to honor the newest members of the society. The Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society of NDSU continues to be active.
Scope and Contents
The Phi Kappa Phi records consist of constitutions and by-laws, meeting minutes, correspondence, membership lists, financial records and various subject files. Included in the constitution and by-laws folder is a national constitution, which the club received in 1926 and several revised copies of the local chapter constitution from 1913, 1928, 1929, 1931, and 1948.
The Meeting Minutes Series covers the period from 1913 to 1935 and appears to be quite complete except for 1916, which is missing. The Correspondence Series is arranged chronologically from 1920-1950. However, there is nothing from 1921. The letters are both incoming and outgoing. The subject matter is based largely on the election of new members into the Honor Society. Also included, however, is information concerning upcoming chapter events as well as events on the national level. The earliest piece of correspondence is from 1917, which was sent with the Phi Kappa Phi Charter.
The Membership Lists Series contains excellent and detailed listings from 1913 to 1938. Some include specific information about the individuals such as addresses, phone numbers and occupations. The miscellaneous membership lists include active as well as newly inducted members from various years between 1928 and 1949.
The Financial Record Series is divided into three separate categories: annual reports, savings account booklets, and treasurers' reports. Included in the annual reports from 1938 and from 1943 to 1949 are the elections of new students, the currently active members (dues) and the chapter's deposits and withdrawals from 1921 to 1925, from 1926 to 1938 and from 1946 to 1949. The treasurers' reports cover the period from 1921 to 1924 and dues are recorded from 1919 to 1924.
The Subject Files Series contain a wide variety of materials including booklets and guest lists from annual Phi Kappa Phi recognition banquets, 1946-1949. There is also a diploma certifying Clarence Reed as a 1927 member of the Phi Kappa Phi. The "Manual of Instructions for Officers and Rituals," published January 1933, contains information on initiation ceremonies, officer installation ceremonies, convention delegates, election of members, fellowships, and insignias. The music and lyrics to the official song of the chapter, entitled "To Phi Kappa Phi," can also be found in the subject files. No composer or lyricist is given.
Also included in the files are various national convention reports:
the Pittsburgh convention in 1917, the St. Louis convention to 1920, the
Toronto convention 1921, and the Indianapolis convention 1937. The
national officers reports, 1931-1933 and 1935-1937, contain reports of
the secretary, investment committee, executive council, editor, treasurer,
regent and chairman of the extension committee, and the fellowship supervisor.
The necrology folder covers 1924 and 1936 to 1937 and contains information
on Arland D. Weeks, Andrew Franklin Hunsaker and P.F. Towbridge.
Newspaper clippings include material from the years 1935 and 1937.
There is a sample petition from Louisiana State University that was used
for acquiring a charter grant in 1930. The scrapbook covers the period
from 1913 to 1951 and includes newspaper clippings from 1925 to 1951, officer
lists from 1913 to 1935, a chapter history and a constitution.
