NDSU CENTENNIAL (1989-1990)

Records, 1985 - 1990

HISTORY
The 1989-1990 school year was declared NDSU Centennial. This was the culmination of many years of planning. In 1986, President Loftsgard appointed Fred Walsh (Professor Emeritus) to chair the planning of the Centennial. He created an Advisory Committee to oversee the Centennial's development. All other committees were formed as sub-committees to this body. He was instrumental in the establishment of the foundation and direction for the Centennial. He also created the theme, "For the Land and Its People," for the Centennial. However, his health forced him to give up the Centennial Chair, and Donald Hanson (Superintendent of Facilities, NDAES) was appointed by President Loftsgard in the fall of 1987. Mr. Hanson saw the project to its completion in 1990.

The death of President Loftsgard in 1987 sparked only a small change in the Centennial. The appointment of Jim Ozbun in 1988 provided a fabulous kick off to the Centennial, when he announced his inauguration ceremony in September of 1989. However the inauguration is not a part directly related to this collection. All records for the inauguration are contained with the presidential collections in the archives.

The Centennial was highlighted with such events as Founder's Week, the community day celebration, the exhibition hall pavilion and a symposium series. This is a collection of materials, correspondence and minutes about the Centennial. Also there are videotapes, photos and other memorabilia concerning the Centennial. Their location can be found in the directory folder of this collection.

SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The first series includes a copy of the Goals and Objectives of the Centennial. These were written by Fred Walsh, Centennial Chairman, however, no dates are given for the work.

The Committee Series contains minutes of various committees for the Centennial. The first is the committee structure. This includes a list of committees and its members. It also includes original proposals of committees and task forces. There are no dates on these records, so the membership records are not totally complete. Second is the Advisory Committee, which seems to be the central authority for the Centennial. The committee minutes are in chronological order from September 1985 through April 1989. There also are two committee reports; January and October 1988, a centenary dated May 14, 1987 and an overview of the Centennial. Third are the minutes for the Community Day Committee. This includes minutes from February 1989 through April 1990 in chronological order. Information included in this file may be of interest to people looking in Founder's Week folders. The fourth is the minutes concerning Exhibits Committee. This includes the layout of the pavilion. Individual displays are located in Project Series. The minutes are arranged in chronological order from January 1987 through February 1990. The Exhibits Committee Correspondence is dated from April 1986 to February 1990. Fourth are the Founder's Week Committee minutes. These minutes are arranged in chronological order from November 1986 through April of 1990. The Founder's Week Committee correspondence is dated from January 1985 to 1990. Finally, are the minutes of the Gift Committee. This includes research on the pieces produced by Gordon Mortensen. Most of the records for the committee are from 1986.

The third series is additional Correspondence of the Centennial committees. It was originally kept with the committee's minutes. The correspondences for the Exhibits Committee and Founder’s Week Committee have been kept with the committee minutes. All remaining correspondence is arranged in chronological order. The correspondence is both incoming and outgoing from various members of the Centennial Committee. Fred Walsh, Charlotte Bennett, and Don Hanson seem to have a majority of this correspondence. There is an ideas received folder, which was received between 1985 and 1986. Also there are two folders of general correspondence. The first is from 1985 to 1989 and the second is devoted to 1990. These are various letters received and copies of responses from various members of the Centennial Committee. The second is mostly devoted to thank-you letters to various participates in the Centennial. There are two notable letters in these folders. The first is a proclamation from Governor George Sinner. The second is a copy of a letter from President George Bush. (The original is hanging in the University President's office.) Included in the correspondence series are various notes and speeches of Fred Walsh during his tenure as Centennial Chairman.

The fourth series is devoted to various Projects during the Centennial. The Exhibition Hall is the most complete and therefore is separated from the rest of the projects. Two folders divide up the exhibits for each of the schools at the University. Specific designs, scaled drawings, and work orders for specific displays. They also include committee minutes and budgets. There are also preparation schedules, pavilion designs and work request forms. There are varying amounts of information and there are absences for some. There is one folder devoted to various other small projects. A listing of these projects can be found in the finding aid. Notable are designs for a new University Mace used in Jim Ozbun's inauguration. The contract series has further information about specific speakers. There are specific materials and correspondence for each project, however it varies in content and completeness. Finally, a folder is devoted to projects that were abandoned or not completed. These are also listed in the finding aid. There are specific materials and correspondence for each project, however it varies in content and completeness.

The fifth series is devoted to Publications concerning the Centennial. The first folder
contains various brochures produced for the Centennial. The Centennial committee published these. The second folder is a collection of newspaper clippings from regional newspaper concerning the Centennial and advertisement in Newspapers for the Centennial. The third folder contains NDSU publications devoted to the Centennial. The final folder contain the 100 NDSU 1990 calendar with historical photographs taken the from NDSU Archives.

The sixth series is devoted to Contracts for the Centennial. There are copies of contracts to several speakers during the Centennial Speakers include: Dr. Norman Borlaug, Malcolm Forbes Jr., John Kenneth Galbraith, Harvey Mackay and Beverly Sills. Also there are less formal contracts for the FM Symphony Orchestra and the NDSU Gold Star Band. The series also includes correspondence about these contracts.

The Student and Alumni Series is the seventh series. It has campus organization plans for the Centennial and alumni plans for participation with the Centennial.

The eighth series is the Audio/Video Series. This includes the Centennial Video Series, advertisement spotlights, and musical selections.

The final series is the Memorabilia Series. It contains four boxes of various memorabilia pertaining to the Centennial Celebration.
