Biographical Sketch
Leo Hertel was born on April 7, 1902 in Schwerin on the Warthe, Germany.
He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Munich in 1928 and married
Elsa Alletzhauser in 1932. Before coming to North Dakota State University
(NDSU), Dr. Hertel worked as a professor at Dakota Wesleyan University
from 1934-1936 and Franklin College from 1936-1952. He took two years
off from teaching to work as a civilian employee of the United States Office
of Strategic Services from 1944-1945. From 1952-1972, Hertel was
the editor for the North Dakota Institute for Regional Studies publication
program, as well as a professor at NDSU. In 1969, he was presented
with the Doctor of Service Award from the Blue Key Fraternity. Leo
Hertel died on April 10, 1979 in St. Paul Minnesota.
Scope and Content
The papers of Leo Hertel mainly consist of records relating to his
work as an NDSU professor and Fulbright Scholarship adviser from 1952-1972.
The documents are dated from 1952 to 1970. The folders are arranged
in a single subject file. The collection consists of approximately
5 linear feet.
The collection contains documents related to Hertel's work in the Modern Languages Department at NDSU. There is correspondence between professors, students, and from the President of the University. There also are records pertaining to the Lecture Series that occurred annually on campus. These records include information about the selected speakers and their topics. Hertel was involved in several committees on campus and there are documents detailing this work. The groups include the Constitution, Research, Curriculum, Scholarship and Loans, and Library committees. There are several meeting minute reports and correspondence between members concerning various topics.
The Hertel Papers also include records documenting Hertel's involvement with the Fulbright Scholarship award at NDSU. In his papers are students' applications for the award, advisers information, and newspaper clippings showing who received the award and what their plans were. A majority of Hertel's documents pertain to the curriculum of different departments. There are class listings explaining the prerequisites for the class, and the basic class outline. The departments represented include Education, Music, Psychology as well as several others. There are also curriculum reports included with these records.
