T.H. Hopper (1894-1978) Papers, 1921-1947

Biographical Sketch

T.H. Hopper was born on July 22, 1894.  He obtained his B.A. from Westminister College in Fulton, Missouri in 1917 and his Masters degree in 1920 from the University of Missouri.  Before coming to work at North Dakota Agricultural College (NDAC), he was an instructor with the United States naval reserve in 1918 and 1919 he worked at the Great Lakes station with the rank of aviation quartermaster, first class.  Hopper worked as an agricultural chemist at NDAC from 1920-1939.  He transferred to the U.S. Regional Soybean Industrial Products Laboratory at Urbana, Illinois in 1939.  Hopper died in April 1978 in Missouri.

Scope and Content

The papers of T.H. Hopper mainly consist of records relating to his work at the NDAC Experiment Station from 1920-1939.  The documents are dated from 1921-1947.  The folders are arranged in a single subject file.

The collection contains documents related to Hopper's work with the Agricultural Experiment Station at NDAC.  There is extensive correspondence between Hopper and other faculty members of NDAC, agricultural chemists from other areas of the country and individuals seeking information pertaining to his work in agriculture.

Hopper worked extensively with research on flaxseed and other crops.  There are several papers and research reports related to this work.  The Hopper papers also include reports from research of sunflowers, soybeans, safflower, cattle, and meat investigations.  Some of the findings were published by Hopper and some by other faculty.  There are several findings published by the United States Department of Agriculture from the 1935 census including reports of farm size, crop summaries, and number of farms per county in North Dakota.
