Historical Background:
Dr. Harold H. Flor, a graduate of the University of Minnesota, received his
B.S. in 1922, his M.S. in 1928, and his Ph.D.in 1929. From 1926 to 1929
he was assistant plant pathologist at the Louisiana Agriculture Experiment Station.
Prior to his arrival at North Dakota Agricultural College (NDAC*) in 1931, he
worked at Washington State University. He stayed at North Dakota State
University (NDSU) until his retirement in 1970. He
received an honorary doctorate from NDSU in May 1962
Dr. Flor was a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) plant pathologist at NDSU. One of his most noted achievements was developing a variety of flax with a defensive characteristic that revealed the point of weakness in an attacking rust strain.
He received numerous awards and was well recognized for his work. These awards included: Superior Service awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Outstanding Achievement Award from the University of Minnesota and the Elvin Charles Stackman Award. He became known as a world authority on disease of flax.
*NDAC became North Dakota State University in December 1960.
Scope and Content:
This collection consists of correspondence primarily between Dr. Flor
and Dr. Erwin A Schwinghamer, but also includes correspondence with the
University of California-Riverside and others. The correspondence
file also includes a manuscript from Dr. Schwinghamer, with corrections
made by Dr. Flor. A couple of publications, along with a listing
of publications are also included in a publications file.
