Historical Background:

Gamma Phi Beta sorority started as Sigma Theta sorority in 1908 at Fargo College .   When Fargo College closed in 1922, two graduates from the sorority enrolled at North Dakota Agricultural College* (NDAC) and transferred the organization there.   The group grew, and within 21 years had initiated 155 girls into sisterhood.   In 1929 they petitioned for membership to the Gamma Phi Beta national sorority. In 1930 they were initiated into the Gamma Phi Beta national organization.

The alumnae chapter was made up of any initiated members of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority who were no longer in college or were married.   Their primary objective was to promote a higher mental and social culture for the women who belonged to the local Gamma Phi Beta chapters – Alpha Omicron at NDAC and Gamma Mu at Moorhead State University .

The Gamma Phi Beta Alumnae Chapter had several duties.   It promoted, advised, and contributed financial and other assistance to Gamma Phi Beta chapters.   It helped with rushing, recommended girls as members, provided alumna advisors to attend meetings, held money-raising projects for the chapter house and local philanthropies, and managed the sorority house.
