GAMMA PHI BETA Records

1929-1993
1.5 l.f.

Historical Background:
Gamma Phi Beta sorority started as Sigma Theta sorority in 1908 at Fargo College.  When Fargo College closed in 1922, two undergraduates from the sorority enrolled at North Dakota Agricultural College* (NDAC) and transferred the organization there.  The group grew, and within 21 years had initiated 155 girls into sisterhood.  In 1929 they petitioned for membership to the Gamma Phi Beta national sorority.

In 1930 they were initiated into the Gamma Phi Beta national organization.  They continued to uphold their reputation as local fundraisers, as well as being active in campus activities and the community.  In 1986, due to a decline in membership the Gamma Phi Betas sold their house to the YMCA, and purchased a smaller one.

This decline in numbers never picked up, and the Gamma Phi Beta sorority at NDSU dissolved in 1993.  They sold off the majority of their property, allowing alumni to purchase what they wanted first, and then allowing the public to make purchases.

Scope and Content:
This collection consists of secretary's notes from the House Corporation Board Meetings, 1964-1993, and by-laws.  It also includes a correspondence file of letters sent to alumni, members and parents, as well as responses.  It has publications of the Double Brown, published by the NDSU Gamma Phi Betas, installation memorabilia, and rushing and student conduct rules.  Included also is the scrapbook which was the petition to the National Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, along with two trophies won by the sorority in 1940 and 1941.   In addition, the collection consists of newspaper and magazine clippings, along with board duties and house regulations.  There is also a file reserved for planning/agenda.  A listing of members initiated from 1930-1984 is included and a financial file that deals with some house records and expenses.  Finally, there is a photo of a model of a house.
