History
Epsilon Sigma Phi is an honor society for professional extension workers. The
Upsilon Chapter at North Dakota Agricultural College was organized January 16,
1928. The purpose of this organization is to maintain the ideals, preserve the
traditions, uphold the morale of the Cooperative Extension Service and to promote
a fraternal spirit among its members. It is dedicated to mutual helpfulness,
friendly toleration, and kindly assistance.
After initiation, each new member submitted an extension autobiography for the
“Book of Annals.” The extension autobiography is an account of what
the member thinks are their own accomplishments as an extension worker. Each
member wrote what they thought extension work is and why it is important. It
also includes their education, dates and locations of employment, military service,
authorship and publication, a photograph and other personal information.
The Upsilon Chapter offeres awards for distinguished service in the state to
its members. They also give recognition to non-members by honoring them as State
Friends of Extension. Another award recognizing member’s achievements
is the Certificate of Meritous Service.
The House of Pioneers consists of those members whose period of service antedates
the passage of the Smith-Lever Act, May 8, 1914 and who have an aggregate period
of service of ten or more years. The Smith-Lever Act provided for cooperation
between the extension work of state colleges established by the Morrill Act
of 1862 and the United States Department of Agriculture. It also gave methods
of instruction for outside the college such as public demonstration and publications
in agriculture and home economics. The original members of the House of Pioneers
were George Baker, Thomas Calnan, Thorstein Kristjanson, Albert Norling, and
William Palmer.
Scope and Contents
The records of the Upsilon Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Phi are broken into five
small series. The Organization series contains a list of founding Upsilon Chapter
members and officers (1928) and criteria for nominating members for awards and
achievements (1940, 1944, 1980). The Meeting Minute series (1928-1981) consists
of two copies of annual meeting minutes, one from 1928 to 1978 and the other
from 1928 to 1981. There are no minutes for 1933 and 1937. The Financial series
includes financial reports from 1976-1980. The Annual Meeting Program series
includes programs for annual meetings and recognition dinners from 1947 to 1985.
The largest series is the Book of Annals series (1920s-1980s), which includes
each member’s extension autobiography and various newspaper clippings
about them.
