History
The roots of the North Dakota State University [NDSU] Development Foundation
can be traced back to April 1948, when the North Dakota Agricultural College
[NDAC] Memorial Foundation was incorporated. This group had the following
purposes, as explained in its articles of incorporation: (1) to promote
the research and educational needs, purposes aims, and uses of NDAC, (2)
to receive contributions and donations of money and property, (3) to accept
assignment of patents from staff members who have invented patentable items,
and (4) to purchase, lease, sell, and mortgage property. It was headed
by the NDAC President (an ex officio director) and a group of fourteen
elected directors, who elected officers and appointed the Executive Committee.
The Executive Committee was responsible for recommending members to the
Memorial Foundation. In April 1963, the name of the corporation changed
to the NDSU Memorial Foundation, reflecting the College's name change.
In early 1961 the NDAC Foundation was formed. Its objectives were very similar to those of the Memorial Foundation, but the two were not affiliated. It was managed by the Board of Trustees (commonly referred to as Board of Governors), consisting of ten people with life terms, the NDAC/NDSU President, and the First National Bank and Trust Company of Fargo President.
At the Lake Metigoshe Conference in June 1968, the idea of a program called SU '75 was born. NDSU President Laurel D. Loftsgard introduced it to the public in April, 1969. This began as a program of the University rather than of any specific foundation. SU '75 was a broad-based challenge to NDSU alumni in particular, but to faculty and students as well, to add to and improve the physical facilities of the campus. This was to happen through a six year, $4 million fund drive. The SU '75 drive led to the completion of such projects as the Lindsay South Stands at Dacotah Field and the 4-H Conference Center and Family Life Center additions to the Student Union.
In retrospect SU '75 led to enduring physical features of NDSU as well as to a lasting organization. Although SU '75 originated as a program, it received donations just like the NDSU Memorial Foundation and NDSU Foundation did. Foreseeing that NDSU's monetary needs would continue after 1975, the SU '75 Board of Trustees created the NDSU Development Foundation, which was incorporated in April, 1971. The Development Foundation's purpose was to be the official solicitor and receiver of private gifts to NDSU. SU '75 was its first and foremost project, as well as its model for future fund drives.
In December, 1971, the Memorial Foundation and the NDSU Alumni Achievement Foundation became part of the Development Foundation. In November, 1972, the NDSU Foundation signed a resolution transferring all of its powers, duties, and funds to the Development Foundation.
The Development Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation, has a Board of Trustees consisting of up to forty elected directors and permanently including the NDSU President and NDSU Alumni Association President. It also has a professional staff. The Development Foundation does the following: (1) develops and coordinates NDSU's fundraising program, (2) manages assets such as property and scholarship and teaching endowments, and (3) provides technical and informational expertise to administration, faculty, and staff.
Scope and Contents
The NDSU Development Foundation records consist the following five
series: Memorial Foundation Series, NDSU Foundation Series, SU '75
Series, Development Foundation Series, and Print Materials Series.
The series are separated by topic arranged chronologically, with the exception
of the committee sections in the SU `75 and Development Series and the
correspondence and memoranda sections of the Development Foundation Series,
which are arranged alphabetically.
The NDSU Memorial Foundation Series spans the years 1948 to 1971.
The documents and correspondence regarding the Casselton Seed Farm and
the YMCA of NDSU might be of particular interest. The Memorial Foundation
purchased the Seed Farm in 1949 for $21,060, and today this farm continues
to thrive as a major location of NDSU crop seed research. In 1958,
the YMCA of NDSU deeded the lot at the corner of Twelfth Avenue North and
Thirteenth Street North (currently University Drive) to the Memorial Foundation
with the stipulation that a non-denominational church would be constructed
on the property within five years. The church was not built and,
when other circumstances complicated the situation, a trial followed.
The NDSU Foundation Series covers the years 1961 to 1972. It
contains much more thorough financial information than does the Memorial
Foundation Series. It also contains the resolutions that established
and dissolved the NDSU Foundation.
The SU '75 Series includes the years 1968 to 1975. This project is very well-documented, containing extensive information on its background, Board of Trustees, committees, task forces, and general fund raising activities. Task Force D is discussed thoroughly, with records showing it was responsible for providing a description of the NDSU campus and all of its colleges. Both the Board of Trustees and donors could become more familiar with the face of NDSU through Task force D's efforts. The records within the Background and Highlights Sub-series are particularly helpful in understanding SU `75.
The Development Foundation Series spans the years 1975 to circa early 1990s. Records of the Development Foundation between the years 1971 and 1975 were placed in the SU '75 Series because SU '75 was the project that received all money donated to the Development Foundation in those years. Also, the By-Laws can be found in the appendix of the Memorial Foundation's Bound Minutes, Articles of Incorporation, By-Laws, and General Documents.
The Print Materials Series, spanning the years 1963 to present, is an artificially created series of brochures, flyers, form letters, news releases, publications, etc., created by or for SU '75 and the Development Foundation. Perhaps the most useful item here is the monograph titled "There is No Right Time to Give...The Time is now." It explicitly dates, explains, and illustrates the highlights and accomplishments of and people involved in SU '75. In essence, it synthesizes all other information on SU '75 contained in the Development Foundation Records. There is also a valuable scrapbook pertaining to the Centennial Campaign for NDSU from 1986-1990. It contains print materials used for the campaign. The Honor Roll of Contributors contained in this series is also located in catalogued form in the University Archives, LD3995.H66. The roll for 1989-1990 is missing.
The $75 Million Momentum Campaign
(2002-2005) records – “Among its many objectives, Momentum seeks
to raise more than $30 million for student scholarships. It provides for a $13
million building for the College of Business Administration. It has a goal of
$10.5 million for new teaching endowments. Momentum seeks $10 million in contributions
to the Annual Fund, which gives the university financial flexibility to put
technology in the classroom, purchase laboratory equipment, bring respected
lecturers to campus and assist graduate students in their research. The campaign
also seeks to raise $1.5 million for projects at the Equine Center, $1.5 million
for the NDSU Libraries and $8 million for the Bison Sports Arena project.”
