History
The official founding of the North Dakota Cooperative Extension Service
was on July 1, 1914, although North Dakota Agricultural College was active
in outreach well prior to that date. "Early in the year 1895 requests
began to come to the College for speakers to be used for Farmers' Institutes,
which had been established in several localities in the State. The
first of these "Farmer Institutes" in which the College participated was
held in Casselton in March, 1894, followed later in the season by meetings
in Buxton, Mayville and Larimore. From that time until the organization
of the Extension Division in 1914 the work of the Farmers' Institutes was
carried on chiefly by the members of the College staff, who were also employed
in the Experiment Station." (Beacon Across the Prairie. 1961, Hunter, William
G., Fargo: NDIRS, p. 54)
In the Catalog and Announcement of the North Dakota Agricultural College for 1913-1914 the Department of College Extension is listed for the first time. The first two paragraphs under the department provide an explanation as to its purpose: "While the Agricultural College gives instruction to many hundreds of student annually, yet this is but a small percentage of the masses of men and women of all ages who are entitled to such benefits. It is the purpose of the department of college extension to carry to boys and girls, teachers, farmers, farmers' wives and to all people of the state, in slight degree at least, the opportunities of resident students." (p. 112). Included in its offerings were: industrial contests, boys' and girls' institutes, high school lecture courses, extension schools, public school cooperation, press services, organizational assistance for farmers' club and business associations, exhibits, and the package library.
The Extension Services is still an intricate part of North Dakota State University. Today there are Extension Service offices in 52 of the 53 counties in the state. Furthermore, "through its state-wide network of agricultural experiment stations and extension centers and electronic technology, NDSU provides a growing capability for delivering education, cultural activities, and information to every school and to the homes of all the citizens of North Dakota." (NDSU Bulletin 2002-2004, p.3)
Scope and Content
This eclectic and artificially created collection contains the records
of Cooperative Extension consisting of work conducted through their office
dealing with agricultural education and assistance for area farmers.
The documents are dated from 1910-2002.
The collection contains numerous special and general circulars (1918 - 1997 [gaps], which were distributed by Cooperative Extension. They cover several topics including crop and animal care, insect and rodent removal techniques, and general family nutrition. Similar to the circulars, there are also bulletins included (1910-1992 [gaps]), which cover topics such as estate planning, boys and girls clubs, and trade areas in North Dakota. Along with these short circulars, there are more publications (1921 - 1999 [gaps]) dealing with area governments, crop information and research, and animal research reports.
The Cooperative Extension records include educational materials that were used. There are lesson plans for programs about nutrition, business, and astronomy. Also included with the educational material are programs from various Homemakers Club meetings (1920s - 1930s). The topics covered in the meeting booklets include, meal planning, how to select quality food, how to prepare meat, and how to keep your family healthy.
Cooperative Extension produced several newsletters (1911-1999 [gaps])
that deal with various topics important to the area. Some of the
newsletters are about crop and pest reports, population changes, and community
planning. Also included in the collection are general documents from
the department such as memorandum, reports, press releases and staff directories
(1920s -1990s). Cooperative Extension hosted several radio talks
and the transcripts from these talks are also in the collection (1931-1933).
