History
The first mention of the Biochemistry Department is found in the 1922 Biennial
Report to the Board of Administration of the North Dakota Agricultural College
(NDAC). It was not until 1948 that the first MS was completed and the first
Ph.D. in 1964. A major portion of the Biochemistry program had been practical
work at the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station where many research
projects are conducted. Today (2005),”Students with an interest in biochemistry
earn the B.S. degree in biochemistry and molecular biology. This provides
flexibility in the selection of courses for those students who plan to seek
employment in areas related to biochemistry, enter graduate or medical school
or teach in high schools or colleges. The program provides training in biochemistry,
botany, microbiology, zoology or in applied areas according to the student's
interest. In addition to the courses in chemistry, physics and mathematics,
16 credits in biological sciences, 18 credits of electives in the humanities
and social sciences, plus six credits in English, three credits in speech
and two credits in wellness are required. The pre-medical student is encouraged

The chairman of the Biochemistry Department for over 30 years (1956-1988)
was Dr. Harold J. Klosterman. Dr. Klosterman received his Bachelor of Science
degree from NDAC in 1943, his MS Degree in 1949, and his Ph.D. from the University
of Minnesota in 1955. He joined the staff of NDAC in 1946 and was made chair
of the Department in 1956. Dr. Klosterman was instrumental in the development
of the doctoral program in the 1960’s. He was also chair of the committee
responsible for the construction of Dunbar Laboratories. Under his supervision
the department received over $250,000 in grant money from 1961-1972.
Scope and Contents
The first series contains North Dakota State University (NDSU) Related
Records (1958-1988), such as minutes of meetings, annual reports,
and financial records. It also includes grant proposals and reports on research
agreements.
The second series consists of Correspondence (1956-1985)
between Dr. Klosterman and professors at other colleges, primarily relating
to research agreements and projects.
The Research Records (1946-1988) are quite extensive and
include active project lists, requests for extensions, project descriptions,
and progress reports. The majority of the series consists of the research
note journals of many students and Dr. Klosterman. Most of the research was
conducted at the Agricultural Experiment Station.
The Staff Records (1984-1988), consisting of job openings,
applications, interview reports and procedures, and appointment forms.
The Publication and Reports (1969-1987) are reprints and
reports relating to research projects that were conducted at NDSU and the
Agricultural Experiment Station. Some of the papers are related to lectures
given by Dr. Klosterman.
