Biographical Sketch
Allan Fischer grew up in Staten Island, New York. In 1956, he earned his B.A. in chemistry from Waynesburg College in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. He earned his master's degree at Oklahoma State University in 1961 and his Ph.D. in chemistry at Indiana University in 1967. From 1966-1968 Fischer held a post-doctoral appointment in chemistry at the University of Minnesota. He then joined the faculty of North Dakota State University (NDSU) in 1968 as an assistant professor of biochemistry and became a full professor in 1980. Fischer received the Outstanding Academic Adviser Award for the College of Science and Mathematics in 1985 and the Blue Key Distinguished Educator Award in 1989. He took on the position of dean of the College of Science and Mathematics in 1986, served as interim vice-president for academic affairs from 1990-1991 and interim president of university advancement from 1992-1993. Fischer became the director of the Governor's School in Science and Mathematics in 1990. Fischer served as interim president of NDSU from 1998-1999. He retired from NDSU in the summer of 1999.
Scope and Content
The papers of Allan Fischer consist primarily of records related to his association with the North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NCC) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The records cover a thirty year time period, from 1968 to 1998.
The collection contains records related to the NCC including correspondence, memorandum, minutes from meetings, and manuals concerning the organization and university level athletics. There are also similar records related to the NCAA. Included are also records related to the North Dakota State University Athletic Committee, which Fischer was involved in. These records include documents associated with several different NDSU athletic groups such as broadcasts of athletic events, women's athletics at NDSU, and reports from the faculty athletic representative.
