University Senate Library Committee
Minutes for review and approval
Library Conference Room

MEMBERS PRESENT: Tom Christensen, Andres Campiglia, Bill Cosgrove, Dinesh Katti, Char Myre, Jim Richardson, Leo Vijayasarathy

Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 10:13 a.m.

Memo to Faculty on Serials Review

A motion was made/seconded to recommend the forwarding of a draft memo to faculty on serials review (Richardson/Katti).  Discussion followed.  Members expressed the opinion that the memo should be forwarded and committee members should support and monitor the review process.  The motion carried unanimously.

Review and Update on the Serials Problem

Christensen distributed copies of the 1995-1996 NDSU University Senate Library Committee Report.  The report outlines the serials crisis as it existed at the time the report was written, suggests funding and cancellation options and contains Library Committee recommendations made prior to the last serials cancellation project.  Mark England led a brief discussion of some newer alternatives to serials subscriptions including pre-print servers.

Proposed Rules for Electronic Submission of Supplemental Disquisition Materials

Christensen reported that he forwarded a copy of the minutes from the previous University Senate Library Committee meeting to Dr. Slanger of the Graduate School and extended an invitation to attend this meeting but had not received a reply.  Mark England and Tom Bremer did not believe that the Library had received comment back from the Graduate School on the proposed rules.

Monitoring Serials Review within the Colleges

Christensen led a discussion of committee member's role in monitoring the serials review within the various colleges and departments.  Committee members should keep their colleges and departments apprised of the serials review process and direct the colleges and departments to resources such as the Collections Management Page on the Libraries' homepage.  Subject librarians will contact department chairs to begin the work of ensuring that departments have relevant, current subscriptions.

Meeting Dates and Times

Tentative meetings are scheduled for the first Wednesday of each month at 10:10 a.m.  Christensen will provide advance notice of meetings, including an agenda, or notice of cancellation in the event of a lack of agenda items.
