Old Business
Main Library Lobby renovation
This project is well underway with an expected completion of early May. Student Government will be asked to do a ribbon cutting ceremony as a mini-opening then. A dedication ceremony is being planned with the donor and Dr Chapman for Homecoming. .
Casual Reading Collection draft policy statement
A copy of the draft policy statement was distributed and comments requested. Most of the policy statement was derived from the intent/agreement with the donor.
FLockers & book returns
Additional public lockers are scheduled to be installed in the Main Library later this year. The Library is working with Student Services/Residence Life to identify locations around campus for additional book return bins. New bins have been purchased for outside the bldg and the plan is to install one new bin elsewhere on campus each year for the next several years.
Online catalog (ODIN) update
The new online catalog is currently in test mode and available at the library website. Anticipated “go live” date is May 1. The new catalog includes the NDSU libraries and 50 other libraries in North Dakota. Concordia College and MSUM libraries will not be moving to their new catalog until December so this will affect the TCU access. However, once
the Minnesota libraries have completed their transition the ability to search ND, SD, and MN libraries simultaneously will be available.
New Business:
Momentum Capital Campaign
The NDSU Development Foundation will focus on the faculty/staff phase of the capital campaign during April. $1.5 million is the target for the libraries. The campaign will go into the public phase at Homecoming.
Life Sciences Librarian position
Alan Stevens resigned in February from his position as Life Sciences Librarian. The vacancy is now being advertised in the Chronicle and a number of library journals and listservs. Char Myhre, who formerly held the position is acting as interim as well as chairing the search committee.
Lobby pay phones
Due to lack of use, the pay phones in the lobby of the Main Library
will be removed this month. The two free phones for local calls
will remain. A member of the committee asked if cell phones
were permitted in the library. Signs are posted asking people
to take their cell phone conversations to the front lobby area
or the downstairs gallery area.
Architecture librarian
Fran Fisher, Humanities Librarian, has taken on responsibility for the new Casual Reading Collection. Mark England, who is the Engineering Librarian, has assumed responsibility for Architecture. Mark has previous experience serving Architecture.
Printing management system
The libraries will be included in the new printing management system being implemented campus-wide. This will limit the number of free prints/copies for each student during a semester and make more tech fee funds available for new computers etc. The system will address the problem of excessive printing by a small number of students, faculty who print large numbers of class handouts in the library, etc. Questions about the project should be directed to Mr. Tom Moberg/IACC.
Subscriptions
Departments wishing to cancel or change periodical subscriptions should
be aware that most of the current subscriptions have a January 1 start date which requires the library to notify the subscription service the previous summer. Please contact your subject liaison librarian for assistance.
Other
Thank you to those who served on the committee this year. A meeting in early May will be called only if necessary. Of course any questions, issues or problems can be directed to Pamela.
