Water From Below
If the water damage comes from below (continual
running water from burst pipes, flash flood, accumulated leaks from
above, etc.):
- During work hours notify your supervisor
and/or the Administrative Assistant (1-8352) or backup to contact
Physical Plant (231-7911) to address the problem.
After hours notify your supervisor
and/or contact Physical Plant (231-7911) yourself to report water
leakage and ask them to address the problem (turn off water, etc.).
- If Physical Plant can not address the situation
immediately, do the best you can to fix the problem (i.e., turn
off the main water supply [see map], wet vacuum area, etc.)
- If major leak, use call list to enlist more staff
to help.
- Move endangered records up to higher shelves or
to a dry location by using hand truck, dolly, or book truck.
- Give any damp library materials (monographs, serials,
maps, etc.) to Cataloging for initial processing.
Things to keep in mind:
- Do not enter flooded areas until cleared by Police/Fire
authorities/EHS.
- Do not walk through moving water.
- Post a staff member at entrance to flooded areas
to keep out unauthorized persons, if the building has not been
evacuated.
If there is major damage call 911 and follow evacuation
procedures.
- In event of a catastrophic flood, contact a disaster
responder company.
