John Patrick Smith Memorial Book
Fund
Memorial book fund established to honor
extension sociologist
NDSU Libraries has established a memorial book fund
in the name of John Patrick Smith, NDSU Extension Service sociologist
from 1978 to 1987. Smith died June 14, 1998.
Gary Goreham, NDSU professor of sociology, and Curtis
Stofferahn, associate professor of rural sociology at the University
of North Dakota, initiated the book fund. They will make recommendations
to the NDSU Libraries for the purchase of books pertaining to
rural sociology. Books purchased through the fund will include
a memorial plate honoring Smith.
Smith was educated at Xavier University, the University
of Wisconsin, Madison, and the University of Missouri, Columbia.
He first taught at Moeller High School and St. Xavier High School,
both in Cincinnati. He went on to teach at the University of Wisconsin,
Madison, the University of Missouri, Rolla, NDSU and Clemson University.
In 1978 he was a Fulbright Fellow in Cameroon.
